O presente artigo visa descrever como foi construída a visão sobre os portadores de sofrimento mental e seus respectivos transtornos ao longo da historia, desde a Grécia Antiga até os tempos atuais. Para isso foi realizada uma pesquisa minuciosa de artigos científicos e livros que trazem uma leitura clara e concisa sobre o adoecimento mental, as formas de tratamento, a relação do portador de sofrimento mental não só com a sociedade, mas também com familiares e os profissionais envolvidos no tratamento e acompanhamento dos transtornos presentes em tais indivíduos. O artigo foi descrito de forma cronológica para facilitar a leitura e para demonstrar de forma sucinta em cada época a forma de tratamento, a visão acerca do adoecimento mental, a relação do portador de sofrimento mental com a família e a sociedade, e como este muitas vezes foi excluído do seu meio social e preso em instituições por falta de manejo da família e da sociedade para lidar com tais pessoas.

This article aims to describe how the vision was built on the sufferers and their mental disorders throughout history, from ancient Greece to contemporary times. For this we conducted a thorough search of scientific articles and books that bring a clear and concise reading about mental illness, the forms of treatment, the ratio of patients with mental suffering not only to society, but also with families and professionals involved in the treatment and monitoring of disorders present in such individuals. The article was described in chronological order for ease of reading and to demonstrate briefly each time the form of treatment, the vision of the mental illness, the relation of mental illness patient with family and society, and how this often was excluded from their social and imprisoned in institutions due to lack of management of the family and society to deal with these people.
