The vertical variation of epiphytic bryophytes was studied in a remnant of Atlantic Forest in the city of Osorio (North Coast of Rio Grande do Sul), APA Morro de Osorio. The Atlantic Forest is a tropical forest with great diversity of microenvironments and possible substrates for bryophytes of colonization. The tree trunk in tropical forests is a complex integration between bryophytes and microenvironments, and distance above the ground level is
a factor that contributes to the colonization of these species. Samples were collected in 10 transects of 10
m each, selected randomly in the study area. Samples were collected from all trunks with DAP between 15-35 cm, occurring one meter on each side of the transect. To verify the occurrence of vertical zonation trunk was divided into three height levels: (0 to 0.5 m alt) Level I, Level II (0.5 to 1 m alt.) and Level III (1 to 1,5 m alt.). It was found in total 32 species in 34 phorophytes collected. Analysis of the diversity of species in each level showed no significant variation between the different levels. Where the first presented 23 species and two and three levels, both with 25 species. But the composition of species at each level got a little differentiation, where levels 1 and 2 have three exclusive species, while Level 3 introduced four exclusive species. The results achieved confirm other found in areas of the Atlantic Forest.
