No presente ensaio, analisamos o romance The Great Gatsby, de Fitzgerald, buscando revelar a amplitude das referências históricas e sociais dos mitos que o constituem. No personagem principal da história, Jay Gatsby, homem rico, galante e misterioso, temos configurado o protótipo do self-made man, aquele capaz de ser bem sucedido na vida por mérito próprio. Situado em uma América eufórica e próspera, o romance se torna ainda uma parábola exemplar do sonho americano, o American dream. Dessa forma, problematizaremos como esses mitos se entrelaçam com a trajetória do personagem neste clássico, considerado um dos grandes marcos da literatura norte- americana.

In the present essay, we analyze the romance The Great Gatsby, from Fitzgerald, trying to reveal the amplitude of the historic and social references of the myths that constitute it. In the story’s main character Jay Gatsby, rich, bonny and mysterious man, we have characterized the prototype of the self made man, the one who is able to be successful in life by his own merits. Taking place in and euphoric and prosperous America, the romance becomes and example of the American dream. This way, we are going to explore how these myths are interconnected to the trajectory of this classic character, which is considered one of the North American literature’s greatest spots.
