Cryogenic heat treatments in metals are mainly used to increase, wear resistance and toughness. It is imperative that such tools as drills and helical mills, which work at high speeds and at high temperatures, when in service to both need high hardness and resistant, without intercurrence in extreme conditions of operation. The insertion of the stress relief step before these treatments is a common practice in industries, in order to avoid cracking due to thermal gradients during the metal cooling process. The obtaining of such mechanical properties is done through the tempering and tempering heat treatments. However, previous work has indicated that this practice is directly related to a stabilizing effect of the retained austenite. The present work is a review of the literature that had the objective to present the changes in the microstructure of the metals after cryogenic treatment.
