O presente trabalho busca na Literatura e nos Fatores Socioculturais, que são elementos
interdependentes, mostrar que a sociedade serve artisticamente de pano de fundo para a arte. Na Literatura Brasileira o destaque da prosa Realista é Machado de Assis, um autor que embora considerado apático à vida social por alguns críticos, é um agudo observador da sociedade brasileira. O objetivo do estudo é expor a forma como ele permeia essas questões, destacando, sobretudo, sua forma de manipular as palavras por meio de sua linguagem. A metodologia se deu por meio da pesquisa bibliográfica e mostrou algumas das muitas artimanhas da escrita de Machado. A análise do conto “Pai contra Mãe” deixa uma visão mais profunda dessa obra, mostrando todo o ceticismo do autor com relação ao progresso, além de apresentar uma leitura alternativa. O resultado da análise mostra a questão da sugestão do estilo machadiano, e as pistas que Machado de Assis deixa em suas obras,
principalmente, através do uso da ironia que o leitor às vezes não percebe, além de mostrar o panorama social em que
a obra se insere e os problemas presentes na sociedade.

This study aims to seek in Literature and in social and cultural factors, which are interdependent
elements, to show that society serves artistically as a scenery for Literature. In Brazilian Literature the highlight outstanding of Realistic prose is Machado de Assis. An author, although considered apathetic to social life by some critics, is an acute observer of Brazilian society. The aim of this study is to expose the way the author permeates these questions, noting especially his way of handling the words through their language. The methodological procedures used in this work were by a bibliographic study that showed some of many quirks of Machado’s writing style. The analysis of the tale “Pai contra Mãe”, shows all the skepticism of the author with respect to progress, gives a deeper idea of this work, besides presenting an alternative reading of the tale. The result of the analysis shows
the suggestion of a machadiano style, and the clues that Machado de Assis gives in his works, specially using irony,
which is not always noticed by the readers, besides showing the social view in which the work is inserted and the
problems that are present in society.
