Este capítulo oferece uma breve introdução criminológica à cidade inteligente e, em particular, algumas das grandiosas reivindicações da indústria corporativa e de tecnologia que cercam regularmente o conceito de inteligência urbana. Mais especificamente, descreve cinco putativos “futuros de cidades inteligentes”: 1) “A cidade inteligente como imaginário sociotécnico”; 2) “A cidade inteligente como espaço de brincadeira corporativa”; 3) “A cidade inteligente como zona tecnológica militarizada”; 4) “A cidade inteligente como cidade ciborgue”; e, finalmente, 5) “A cidade inteligente como superfície adversária”. Adotando a perspectiva da criminologia cultural, o capítulo apresenta uma série de perguntas sobre o futuro do ritmo urbano na ‘era da cidade inteligente’. Em particular, pergunta o que “vida” realmente significa quando a vida urbana é finalmente definida e aplicada por um sistema computacional.
This chapter offers a brief criminological introduction to the smart city and in particular some of the grandiose corporate and tech industry claims that regularly surround the concept of urban smartness. More specifically it outlines five putative ‘smart city futures’: 1) ‘The smart city as sociotechnical imaginary’; 2) ‘The smart city as corporate “play” space’; 3) ‘The smart city as militarised tech zone’; 4) ‘The smart city as cyborg city’; and finally, 5) ‘The smart city as adversarial surface’. Adopting the perspective of cultural criminology, the chapter poses a series of questions about the future of urban apace in ‘the age of the smart city’. In particular, it asks what will ‘living’ actually mean when urban life is ultimately defined and enforced by a computational system?
