Este artigo é uma reflexão sobre a utilização do conceito de mestiçagem nas dimensões sociológicas e historiográficas no contexto brasileiro. Nosso objetivo é compreender como a condição mestiça se consolidou como chave-teórica para entender a realidade nacional e como isso relegou aos povos indígenas um lugar preterido, principalmente quando à mestiçagem foi imputada a ideia de distinção. Portanto, fazemos este exercício baseado nas leituras das obras de Renato Ortiz, Serge Gruzinski e Gilberto Freyre, o primeiro nos auxilia com uma linha do tempo sociológica e histórica da intelectualidade nacional, enquanto os dois últimos instrumentalizam o conceito para analisarem realidades mestiça, mexicana e brasileira, respectivamente. Sendo a nossa principal motivação a constatação de que para se garantir direitos, no Brasil, o indivíduo precisa ter consciência de quem é, o que possui e de onde vem, principalmente quando este é indígena. Algo complexo, já que a mestiçagem vista como algo genuinamente brasileiro turva as imagens da realidade brasileira, e produz estigmas sobre os povos indígenas, dificultando a apreensão de suas agências.

This article is a reflection on the use of the concept of miscegenation in the sociological and historiographic dimensions in the Brazilian context. Our objective is to understand how a mestizo condition is consolidated as a theoretical key to understanding the national reality and how it relegated indigenous peoples to a neglected place, especially when the idea of distinction was attributed to miscegenation. Therefore, we do this exercise based on the readings of the works of Renato Ortiz, Serge Gruzinski, and Gilberto Freyre, the first assists us with a sociological and historical timeline of national intellectuality, while the last two instrumentalizes the concept to analyze Mexican and Brazilian mixed realities, respectively. As our main motivation is the observation that to guarantee rights, in Brazil, the individual needs to be aware of who they are, what they have, and where they come from, especially when they are indigenous. Something complex, since miscegenation saw as something genuinely Brazilian muddies the images of the Brazilian reality, and produces stigmas about indigenous peoples, making it difficult for their agencies to apprehend.
