O movimento negro desempenha um papel fundamental na compreensão de como as discussões sobre relações raciais desenvolveram-se ao longo da história do Brasil, tanto no campo intelectual quanto no ideológico. Nos estudos sobre essa temática, no século XX, é possível identificar duas principais correntes. A primeira, representada por Gilberto Freyre, defende a existência de uma convivência racial harmoniosa no país. A segunda, impulsionada pelos estudos da Unesco, reforçou a existência de problemas raciais já denunciados pelo movimento negro brasileiro, como a Frente Negra Brasileira, desde os anos 1930. Nesse contexto, o movimento negro foi o principal agente na contestação da ideologia da democracia racial e utilizou esses estudos para fortalecer suas argumentações. Sendo a linha de frente no enfrentamento ao racismo e à discriminação sofrida pela população negra no pós-abolição, torna-se essencial compreender o alcance e os limites de sua atuação. Assim, este estudo busca analisar a definição do movimento negro brasileiro, a partir das noções ampla e restrita identificadas pelo historiador Joel Rufino dos Santos (1985), bem como discutir a relação entre culturalismo e ativismo negro no Brasil.
The Black Movement plays a fundamental role in understanding how discussions on racial relations have evolved throughout Brazil’s history, both intellectually and ideologically. Studies on this topic in the 20th century reveal two main perspectives. The first, represented by Gilberto Freyre, argues that racial coexistence in Brazil was harmonious. The second, driven by Unescostudies, reinforced the existence of racial issues that hadalready been denounced by the Brazilian Black Movement, such as the Frente Negra Brasileira, since the 1930s. As the leading force in challenging the ideology of racial democracy, the Black Movement used these studies to strengthen its arguments. Given its central role in combating racism and discrimination against the Black population in the post-abolition period, it is essential to understand the scope and limits of its actions. Thus, this study aims to analyze the definition of the Brazilian Black Movement, exploring the broad and narrow concepts identified by historian Joel Rufino dos Santos (1985), as well as discussing the relationship between culturalism and Black activism in Brazil.
