A compreensão da matéria não é relegada a segundo plano à metafísica rahneriana, haja vista ser um constitutivo ontológico dos seres no mundo. É impossível o conhecimento humano prescindir absolutamente do fenômeno material, pois nele se encontra a mais profunda verdade do real. Por não haver dualismo cognitivo no pensamento de Rahner, os seres são entendidos na perspectiva hilemórfica. O ser se dá por via da materialidade mundana que lhe é semelhante. O homem, o único habilitado a tematizar o ser da matéria, é dotado de sentidos especializados que o situa na história deste mundo e suas relações. É justamente na relação com todo da material-formal que experimenta o sentido fundamental da totalidade, inclusive de si mesmo como ser transcendentalmente aberto ao horizonte último do ser, chamado por Karl Rahner de percepção prévia, tendo como fundamento último o Ser Absoluto, condição de possibilidade derradeira de todo conhecimento de fenômenos.

The understanding of matter is not relegated in the background to rahnerian metaphysics, given, be an ontological constitution of beings in the world. It is impossible to do without absolutely human knowledge of the material phenomenon, because it is the deepest of the real truth. Because there is no dualism in cognitive thinking Rahner, beings are considered in hylemorphic perspective. The being is through the mundane materiality that is similar to it. The man, the only one able to thematize the being of matter, is endowed with specialized senses that puts you in the history of this world and their relationships. It is precisely in relation to the whole of reality that experiences the fundamental sense of all, including himself as being transcendentally open to the wider horizon of sense of reality that Rahner calls prior perception, with the ultimate foundation, the Absolute, condition last possibility of all knowledge of phenomena.
