A implantação do ensino superior no Brasil aconteceu de forma tardia, de forma inicial para atender a elite que precisava se deslocar a outros países para conseguir estudo de nível superior e em seguida para fornecer mão de obra especializada. Este estudo teve como objetivo abordar o histórico de implantação do ensino superior no Brasil, buscando demonstrar a evolução e situação do ensino superior no país atualmente, com a apresentação de dados da educação superior de 2010 a 2016. Foram utilizados dados do censo da educação superior para construção e análise de gráficos evolutivos da educação superior do país no período de estudo, e, fundamentação teórica pautada em discorrer a origem e a evolução do ensino superior no Brasil. O ensino superior brasileiro, se encontra mercantilizado, em sua maioria, sustentado por instituições de ensino superior privadas, que detêm a maior parte dos ingressantes e concluintes neste nível de ensino. Os indicadores apontam que é necessário ir além do acesso, é preciso que este venha acompanhado de uma política de permanência, oferecendo bolsas que combatam a evasão em instituições públicas e privadas.

The implementation of higher education in Brazil happened late, initially to meet the elite who needed to move to other countries to achieve higher education and then to provide skilled labor. This study aimed to analyze the history of higher education in Brazil, seeking to explain the evolution and situation of higher education in the country today, with the presentation of data on higher education from 2010 to 2016. Data from the census of higher education for construction and analysis of evolutionary charts of the country's higher education in the period of study, and theoretical basis based on the origin and evolution of higher education in Brazil. Brazilian higher education is mostly commodified by private higher education institutions, which holds the majority of students and graduates at this level of education. The indicators indicate that it is necessary to go beyond access, it must be accompanied by a policy of permanence, offering scholarships that combat evasion in public and private institutions.
