Peter Shaffer é um dramaturgo inglês da segunda metade do século vinte. Um de seus trabalhos de maior destaque foi a peça Equus, que conta a história de um rapaz, Alan Strang, em tratamento psiquiátrico. A peça foi traduzida para as telas de cinema pelo cineasta Sidney Lumet, com roteiro do próprio Shaffer. Tomando como base o conceito de tradução intersemiótica de Jakobson (1995), pode-se dizer que a adaptação fílmica se inclui na categoria de tradução intersemiótica e esta uma das formas de tradução audiovisual. É natural que na tradução da peça para o filme a obra sofra modificações, pois as traduções formam novos objetos que normalmente se desvinculam do original. O presente trabalho visa analisar a as diferenças entre a peça escrita e o filme, concentrando-se, contudo, nas diferenças que afetam a construção do personagem Alan Strang. O corpus da pesquisa foi composto pelo filme e pela peça de Shaffer. A análise do personagem foi feita à luz das Teorias de Tradução e de Literatura.

Peter Shaffer is a British playwright of the second half of the twentieth century. One of his major works is the play Equus, that tells the story of a young man, Alan Strang, who is in psychiatric treatment. The film director Sidney Lumet, with the script of Shaffer, translated the play to the screen. Based on the concept of intersemiotic translation of Jackobson (1995), it may be said that a film adaptation is, in fact, an intersemiotic translation, which in turn is a kind of audiovisual translation. It is then natural that, in the translation of a play to the screen, the original changes because the translations become different texts, normally unattached to the original work. This work’s objective is to analyze the differences between the play and the film. This paper aims at looking at differences between the screenplay and the film, paying special attention to those that affect the character Alan Strang. So, the corpus of the research consists of the film and the play by Schaffer. The analysis of the character was based on translation and literary theories.
