A América Portuguesa se destaca por apresentar uma reunião de fatores expoentes de um local “tropical”. Tal aspecto despertou o interesse de viajantes entre os séculos XVII e XIX. Entre eles, naturalistas fascinados pela flora e fauna do território, que acabaram por relatar este apreço em seus escritos de viagem. O artigo pretende apresentar, portanto, aspectos da literatura de viagem destes naturalistas, identificando suas perspectivas sobre a paisagem do território, bem como a inserção de plantas e animais que acompanharam a expansão dos portugueses e auxiliaram no processo de colonização. Através de tais fontes, é possível delinear uma analogia entre elas e outras fontes históricas mais precisas. Considerando que as relações humanas modificam e são modificadas pelo ambiente, pretende-se entender a importância destes relatos para o estudo da natureza e dos indígenas durante a ocupação portuguesa.

Portuguese America stands out for presenting a gathering of exponent factors of a “tropical” place. This aspect aroused the interest of travelers between the 17th and 19th centuries. Among them, naturalists fascinated by the flora and fauna of the territory, who ended up reporting this appreciation in their travel writings. The article intends, therefore, to present aspects of the travel literature of these naturalists, identifying their perspectives on the landscape of the territory, as well as the insertion of plants and animals that accompanied the expansion of the Portuguese and helped in the colonization process. Through these sources, it is possible to draw an analogy between them and other more precise historical sources. Considering that human relations modify and are modified by the environment, it is intended to understand the importance of these reports for the study of nature and indigenous people during the Portuguese occupation.
