O artigo em questão analisa o romance clássico O velho e o mar (1952) do escritor norte-americano Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) para demonstrar a dimensão social da obra literária, muitas vezes relegada a um segundo plano ou simplesmente ignorada pelos leitores, ainda mais no momento particularmente crítico que a leitura em geral, e a leitura literária em particular, vem passando em nosso país. Tendo como ponto de partida o próprio enredo da narração, são estabelecidos empiricamente parâmetros possíveis de comportamento tanto do idoso quanto da sociedade em que ele se insere, tendo em vista uma melhor compreensão dos fatores envolvidos nessa delicada relação exaustivamente trabalhada no texto da obra. Tais parâmetros de comportamento serão cotejados com diferentes teóricos do envelhecimento (de Masi, Bosi, etc.) a fim de se constatar o real alcance social das teses levantadas por Hemingway em sua obra. Comprova-se, portanto, no recorrer da análise, que o texto literário caracteriza-se sobretudo por seus múltiplos níveis possíveis de leitura, que vão do metafórico ao factual, sem prejuízo do conteúdo social, e que todos esses níveis devem ser levados em consideração no momento em que um leitor competente estabelece contato com uma verdadeira obra de arte

The present article analyses the classical novel The Old Man and the Sea (1952), from the North-American writer Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961),aiming at demonstrating the social role of Literature, sometimes underestimated or simply ignored by readers, especially in the critical scenario of the reading in general – and literary reading in particular – in Brazil nowadays. Starting from the plot of the narrative itself, paradigms of behavior are empirically established not only concerning the elderly but also the society in which they live, towards a broader understanding of all the facts dealt with in such a delicate relationship. These paradigms are compared to the texts of different experts in aging (de Masi, Bosi, etc.), to prove the real social relevance of the ideas proposed by Hemingway in his work. Therefore, the analysis must confirm that the literary text is defined, most of all, by its multiple approaching levels, from the metaphorical to the factual, not to mention the social one, and that all of these levels are to be considered in the moment a really competent reader gets in touch with a real work of art.
