A cultura política no oitocentos no Vale do Paraíba Fluminense – o caso de Manoel Antônio Esteves em Valença

Cidade do Vale do Paraíba Fluminense, Valença destacou-se, no oitocentos, como uma das grandes produtoras de café no Império. A sociedade que aí surgiu caracterizou-se, entre outras coisas, pela montagem de uma rede de poder e de sociabilidades, valendo-se de várias estratégias e alianças. Exemplo disso foi a figura de Manoel Antônio Esteves, comerciante português que, inicialmente em Vassouras e, após o casamento, em Valença, soube articular-se em várias frentes e tornar-se um cidadão respeitado na região. Sua trajetória é ilustrativa de uma cultura política local que estruturou-se em redes sociais através das relações de poder que, aqui, não dizem respeito apenas às clássicas vertentes historiográficas que tinham o Estado como único objeto. Os indivíduos, ainda que desligados das ligações partidárias, também se organizavam, tecendo tais relações entre si, nas instituições e com outros indivíduos. Manoel Antônio Esteves é mais um destes elementos que, pelas cartas que deixou, permite-nos uma análise mais aprofundada desta cultura política oitocentista.

Located in the Valley of the Paraiba in Rio de Janeiro State, the city of Valença stood out in the eighteen hundreds as one of the main producers of coff ee of the Brazilian Empire. Th e society that was formed there was characterized, among other things, by the set up of a network of power and sociabilities, making use of several strategies and alliances. An example of this fact was Manoel Antonio Esteves, a businessman of Portuguese origin that, fi rst in Vassouras and then, after his marriage, in Valença was able to articulate himself in several areas and became a respected citizen in this region. His trajectory is illustrative of a local political culture that structured itself in social networks through power relations that, here, are not only related to the classical historiographic threads that had the State as its single object. Th e individuals, even if disconnected from political parties, also organized themselves weaving such relations among themselves, in the institutions and with other individuals. Manoel Antonio Esteves is one more of these elements that, from the letters that he left, allow us to do a deeper analysis of this political culture from the eighteen hundreds.
