Este artigo tem como objetivo descrever a construção de um mito: Luísa Mahin; a partir dos registros escritos por Luiz Gama, intelectual autodidata do século XIX, filho da ilustre Luísa. Segundo o próprio Luiz Gama, a convivência com sua mãe se deu nos primeiros sete anos, dos seus cinquenta e dois vividos. Por conta do pouco tempo em que estiveram juntos, é possível presumir que muitos desses relatos se deram por fragmentos de sua memória. A partir das palavras de Gama, mesmo sem comprovações históricas, nasceu Mahin; uma mãe que nascera do próprio filho. Conforme suas próprias palavras, era filho de uma negra africana de nome Luísa Mahin, uma mulher forte e plural, que foi quitandeira laboriosa e também revolucionária em insurreições escravas. A riqueza de detalhes, com a qual descreve sua mãe, gera, mesmo sem comprovações históricas, um efeito de veracidade e consequentemente uma crença em sua existência. Além da carta, ela também aparece em versos de alguns poemas de Gama, o que também revela sua figura como inspiração para filho, principalmente nas obras em que aborda sua luta pela abolição e libertação de negros escravizados. O mito Luísa Mahin, é hoje evocada pelo movimento negro, atendendo a uma demanda que busca o protagonismo negro na história do País, e em especial, a necessidade de valorização da mulher negra na história.

This article deals with the construction of Luísa Mahin, based on the records written by Luiz Gama, a self-taught intellectual of the 19th century. According to Luiz Gama himself, living with his mother took place in the first seven years of his fifty-two years. Due to the short time they were together, it is possible to assume that many of these reports were due to fragments of their memory. From the words of Gama, even without historical evidence, Mahin was born; a mother who was born of her own son. According to his own words, he was the son of a black African woman named Luísa Mahin, a strong and plural woman, who was a laborious grocer and also a revolutionary in slave insurrections. The richness of details, with which he describes his mother, generates, even without historical evidence, an effect of veracity and consequently a belief in his existence. In addition to the letter, she also appears in verses from some of Gama's poems, which also reveals her figure as an inspiration for her son, especially in the works in which she addresses her struggle for theabolition and liberation of enslaved blacks. The myth Luísa Mahin, today is evoked by the black movement, meeting a demand that seeks black protagonism in the history of the country, and in particular, the need to value black women in history.
