Considerações sobre os conceitos de língua e variedade: uma discussão com base no galego

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar discussão acerca das diferenças entre os conceitos de língua e variedade, notadamente a respeito de como o conceito de língua se constrói, a partir de que necessidades e com que objetivos. Essa discussão torna-se imperativa uma vez que partimos, em nossa pesquisa, dos usos do galego, do português europeu (PE) e do português brasileiro (PB), os considerando variedades de uma língua que convencionamos chamar de galego-português. Inserida em dois projetos maiores (a. Galego e Português Brasileiro: história, variação e mudança e b. Linguagem em uso, cognição e gramática: cooperação acadêmica Brasil-Portugal), a pesquisa tem como um de seus objetivos inserir o galego em um quadro comparativo até então preferencialmente formado de pesquisas com base na comparação entre PB e PE –, ampliando, dessa forma, o escopo comparativo até o momento utilizado na explicação de traços próprios do PB. Iniciamos nossas palavras pela definição de língua considerada pela Linguística Descritiva, seus elementos constitutivos e funções. Em seguida, elencamos três problemas advindos desse posicionamento estrutural, tendo por base a comparação entre o galego, o PB e o PE: o problema quantitativo, o histórico e o político. A discussão proposta nos levou a concluir que o debate em torno dos conceitos de língua e variedade está marcado pelas próprias representações de linguistas que se propõem a realizar tal discussão. Reforçamos, portanto, a necessidade de se ter a consciência de que, como linguísticas, sempre estamos nos posicionando politicamente – mesmo quando ignoramos esse fato –, atitude que, a nosso ver, é essencial à análise linguística.

In this work, we want to shed some light onto the following questions: what are the differences involved with the concepts of language and variant and, in particular, what are the basic needs and the goals linked to the mental process of language building? Since we, in our research, started from the current knowledge about how Galician, European Portuguese (EP) and Brazilian Portuguese (BP) are employed in everyday speaking, this discussion becomes imperative. We have also looked at these three languages as being linguistic variants of one and the same language, which we have decided to call galician-portuguese. Our work is embedded into a wider field of research, whose branches are: a) Galician and brasilian portuguese: history, variants and changes and b) current language, cognition and grammar: Brasil-Portugal academic cooperation, and one of our tasks is to insert the Galician as an object of study where, up to now, the work has been focused on comparisons between BP and EP. We hope, in this way to expand the comparative scope at our disposal when we try to explain the characteristic atributes of BP. We begin by stating, at first, the definitions of LANGUAGE, as usually employed by Descriptive Linguists, of its constituent elements and of its functions. We then proceed by presenting three problems originated by our point of view, which appear when we compare the Galician, The BP and the EP among themselves. These problems are: a)The quantitative problem b) the historical problem and c) the political problem. Our suggestion for discussing these issues has led us to the following conclusions: the debate involving the concepts of LANGUAGE and VARIANT is contaminated by the pre-conceptions which inhabit the linguists minds, even before they decide to embark in such a difficult enterprise, We call, therefore, emphatically the attention to the fact that everybody must be conscious, while acting as linguists, that we are always taking a politically biased position - even when we are not aware of that - and this consciousness is, in our opinion, essential for a good linguistic analysis.
