Breastfeeding is the fundamental principle of immunology that begins soon after birth, a natural source of protection that passes from mother to child, and a unique moment of love and affection. The present study aims to demonstrate the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby, the importance of paternal, family care and the difficulties related to the maintenance of breastfeeding. The bibliographical research was selected for the present study, maintaining as a procedure for inclusion the articles published between the years 2012 to 2018 and that had reference to the proposed theme. Infants who received exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months were 52%, and 48% were exclusively breastfed until the fourth month of life. However, the majority (31.91%) believe that the child should not be breastfed between 13 months and 2 years. The longer the time devoted to breastfeeding, the greater the benefits generated for the mother and the baby. Breastmilk is a complete food where no other type of supplementation is needed until the sixth month.
