The article sets out to reflect about the concept of blessing in
Ancient Israel, having as a framework the book of
Deuteronomy. In the actual social and religious environment,
blessing is something very much used. We could even say that
it is something that is “in fashionâ€. In some contexts blessings
are asked and given everywhere, sometimes freely but
sometimes in exchange for material goods. Has this anything
to do with the original sense of the blessing in the narratives
of the Old Testament? The Deuteronomic blessing shows the
liberality and generosity of God and it is portrayed by a strong
social dimension. What can we learn from it that may enrich
nowadays our Christian social commitment?
Resumo Espanhol:
El artÃculo se propone reflexionar sobre el concepto de
bendición en el antiguo Israel, teniendo como marco el libro
del Deuteronomio. En la ambiente religioso y espiritual del
hoy, la bendición es algo muy usado; se podrÃa incluso decir
que está “de modaâ€. En algunos contextos se piden y se
otorgan bendiciones por doquier, en ocasiones gratuitamente
pero en ocasiones también a cambio de bienes materiales.
¿Qué tiene que ver esto con el sentido original de la bendición
en las narraciones del Antiguo Testamento? La bendición
deuteronómica manifiesta la gratuidad de Dios y se caracteriza
por una fuerte dimensión social. ¿Qué podemos aprender de
ella que pueda enriquecer hoy nuestro compromiso social
cristiano?
