The intellectual field known as gender and environment studies the complex power dynamics that interweave the co-production of nature and subjects. It pays particular attention to how subjects and their relation with their surroundings are profoundly shaped by gendered processes of differentiation and domination. By exploring three main themes, this article presents a critical review of recent literature in the field and calls for an environmental history that better understands the importance of gender roles, stereotypes, values and expectations in environmental politics.
