Essa é uma pesquisa sobre a Putumayo, gravadora nova-iorquina de world music, que se propõe a organizar coletâneas que reúnem faixas de “lugares exóticos onde a música se originou”, para que o resto do mundo conheça aquelas culturas “tais como são”. Mas o que se observou no exercício de pesquisa é que o trabalho de curatela da gravadora traz em seu bojo uma forte marca autoral: a Putumayo não apenas (passivamente) expõe as culturas em seus próprios termos nativos, mas (ativamente) as constitui substancialmente, com base na sua gramática nova-iorquina. Tendo isso em vista, o texto intenta evidenciar como os passivos e desinteressados gestos de curadoria são também ativos e interessados atos de autoria: as culturas do mundo não estão sendo apenas dispostas e organizadas, mas também constituídas. Aquele que seleciona, por se acreditar apto para tal, é também o que instaura. Dessa maneira, o artigo se debruça sobre o binômio “mediação de sentido/ imputação de sentido”, almejando analisar como instâncias intermediárias, ao se julgarem capazes de mediar, acabam por imputar os sentidos que pareciam estar apenas mediando: justamente por residirem nesse entre, os mediadores acabam vazando para os polos, constituindo-os. Em linhas gerais, esse é um trabalho sobre práticas de exotização e estereotipia na construção do Outro, que objetiva mostrar como o exercício de sair de si em busca da alteridade, quando baseado nos próprios pressupostos, não deixa de ser um mergulho para dentro de si mesmo.
Putumayo is a New York record label of World Music collections. According to its own words, the company’s work con-sists in organizing collections that gather music from “exotic places where the music was originated” to enable the rest of the world to know that culture “as it is”. But what we observed during our research is that the curatorship work of the label brings a strong authorship signature. Taking as research method the analysis of the discourse of the stereotyped and cliché naïve pictures presented in the CD cover images, we could see that the label isn’t only passively exposing the cultures in their own native terms, but actively constituting them based in its New York based point of view. In light of this, our question is: how passive and disinterested curatorship gestures may be also active and interested acts of authorship? We could see that the world cultures are not merely being organized, but also formed by the label, guiding us to the conclusion that the one who selects, believing that he can do it, is also the one who creates. In specific terms, the article lays on the mediation issue, aiming to analyze how intermediate instances, precisely because they view themselves as capable of living in this between poles, start escaping to these edges, constituting them rather than making them dialogue. Between the production and reception of music, there is a long mediation process, and if it’s true that the creation and the use of senses define their circulation, it is also correct to affirm that this flow shapes its boundaries. In general terms, this is a work about exotization practices of construction of the Other in the phonographic industry which intends to show how this exercise of looking at the other, when based in one’s own beliefs, it’s always a dive into one’s own self.
