A complexidade social do fenômeno turístico é refletida na compreensão do mesmo pelos seus agentes e grupos de interesse, inserindo-se entre divergências e convergências no âmbito social, acadêmico e mercadológico. Dada a urgência por uma construção científica crítica que promova um conhecimento amplo e profundo sobre o turismo, discute-se neste artigo a existência de uma teoria do turismo, partindo do pressuposto que a indagação da problemática traz consigo um caminho para a reflexão sobre o conjunto de tentativas de explicações que se somam as noções de turismo difundidas em diferentes setores da sociedade. Trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória analítica de revisão bibliográfica.O estudo apresenta um levantamento do estado da arte sobre a teorização do turismo, identificando as principais abordagens e propositivas dos primeiros autores à atualidade. Constata-se que não há uma teoria balizar sobre o fenômeno que tenha se estabilizado como uma teoria geral, chegado ao consenso entre os estudiosos e respondido aos fundamentos epistêmicos da área. Contudo, as discussões feitas vêm contribuindo para o amadurecimento da compreensão científica do turismo.
The social complexity of the tourism phenomenon is reflected in the understanding of the phenomenon by its agents and interest groups, inserting itself among divergences and convergences in the social, academic and marketing spheres. Given the urgency of a critical scientific construction that promotes a broad and deep knowledge about tourism, this article aims to discuss the existence of a theory of tourism. Based on the assumption that the questioning of the problem brings with it a path to reflect on the range of attempts to explain the notions of tourism diffused in different sectors of society. This research is based on an analytical exploratory bibliography review. The study presents a survey of the state of the art on tourism theorizing, identifying the main approaches and propositions from the first authors to the present time. It was found that there is no stabilized theory about the phenomenon which has been accepted as a general one, reaching an agreement amongst the scholars and answering to the epistemological foundations of the academic field. However, the discussions have contributed to the maturation of the scientific understanding of tourism.
