Atanásio de Alexandria foi uma figura fundamental nos grandes debates na Igreja do quarto século concernentes à divindade do Filho e do Espírito Santo. Será a preocupação deste artigo verificar os pontos básicos da doutrina de Atanásio a respeito do Espírito Santo. A grande obra de autoria atanasiana sobre o Espírito Santo é uma série de cartas a Serapião, bispo de Thmuis, no Egito. Estas cartas foram escritas por volta dos anos 356/60 em resposta a consultas feitas a Atanásio por Serapião a respeito de um grupo de cristãos de sua diocese que desacreditavam na divindade do Espírito Santo, ainda que mantivessem a divindade do Filho.
Athanasius of Alexandria was a key figure in the great debates of the fourth-century Church regarding the divinity of the Son and the Holy Spirit. This paper will try to determine the main points of Athanasius’s doctrine of the Holy Spirit. His great work on the matter are a series of letters to Serapion, bishop of Thmuis, Egypt. These letters were written approximately in 356/60 as a response to the Serapion’s inquiries concerning a group of Egyptian Christians from his diocese who did not accept the divinity of the Holy Spirit, although they believed the divinity of the Son.
