The elaboration of maps is an activity so old that it is confused with the own history of the humanity. This shows the importance that the map always had for man. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief summary of some considerations about Mercator's Universal Projection as a representation of the Earth's curved surface on a plane. In this article, the Mercator Transverse Universal Projection (UTM) was further detailed. This projection was recommended in 1951 by the International Geodesic Association for use throughout the world as a form for international cartographic uniformity. In Brazil, the UTM system was adopted in 1958 by the Army Geographic Service Directorate (DSG).
