O artigo propõe uma análise das gravuras
que ilustraram as cartas de Vespúcio.
Por um lado, aborda aspectos
de genealogia da imagem e, por outro,
o estabelecimento dos parâmetros
utilizados para distinguir o bom e o
mau selvagem durante o século XVI.
Além disso, o texto busca discutir a
difi culdade que há para captar algo
ainda desconhecido, ao evidenciar o
quanto a iconografi a medieval serviu
de referência familiar para elaborar as
representações pictóricas dos até então
ignorados habitantes do Mundo Novo.

Resumo Inglês:

The article proposes an analysis of the
engravings that illustrate Vespúcio´s
lett ers approaching on one hand aspects
of genealogy of the image, and on the
other the establishment of parameters of
what will become the representation of
the good and evil savage during the XVI
century. It studies in depth the problems of
representing something that is unknown,
demonstrating how medieval iconography
become the familiar coordinate for the pictorial
representations of the inhabitants of
the New World.
