A proposta deste trabalho é investigar os aspectos históricos, polÃticos e sociais no romance A mulher que ia contra as portas, do escritor irlandês, Roddy Doyle, com o objetivo de analisar os problemas familiares presentes na obra, tais como o alcoolismo e a violência doméstica vivida pela protagonista Paula Spencer. O romance em estudo é um relato de Paula Spencer, repleto de analepses, algumas, inclusive repetidas, à medida que ela vai repensando sua vida familiar ao longo de trinta anos. Nesse sentido, pretendemos averiguar de que maneira a estrutura narrativa da obra reflete o interior da narradora-protagonista ambientada numa Irlanda ainda conservadora. Pois durante o perÃodo refletido pela protagonista, a identidade da mulher irlandesa era reduzida, na própria constituição do paÃs, aos papéis sociais de esposa e mãe. Vale ressaltar que apenas nos anos 1990 a Irlanda apresentou abertura para o divórcio que até então era proibido no paÃs.

The aim of this study is to investigate the historical, political and social aspects in the novel The Woman Who Walked Into Doors, by Irish writer Roddy Doyle, in order to analyze the family issues present in the work, such as alcoholism and domestic violence experienced by the protagonist Paula Spencer. The novel in analysis is an account made by Paula, full of analepsis, some even repeated, as she thinks her life throughout thirty years. We intend to find out how the narrative structure of the work reflects the interior of the narrator-protagonist acclimated in a still conservative Ireland. For the period reflected by the protagonist, the identity of the Irish woman was reduced, in the constitution of the country, the social roles of wife and mother. It is noteworthy that only in the 1990s Ireland started accepting divorce, which until then was banned in the country.
