Este artigo retrata a forma como alguns viajantes e colonos percebiam e inteiravam-se com a floresta das colônias do vale do Itajai e norte de Santa Catarina durante a segunda metade do século XIX Procuramos refletir sobre o que significava a floresta para estes imigrantes europeus e as transformações deste após seu estabelecimento nas colônias do sul do Brasil. Portanto, nossas atenções estão centradas na interface entre o imigrante e o meio natural.

This article describes how some settlers and travelers realized and integrated with the forest of ltajai Valley colonies and the north Santa Catarina ones, during the second half of nineteenth century. Our aim is to think about the meaning of the forest to these European immigrants and its changes after the establishment of settlements in south Brazil. Therefore, we draw attention to an interface between natural envi-ronment and the immigrant.
