O presente artigo, de caráter exploratório e experimental, trata da possibilidade e possíveis benefícios de se redimensionar a história do cristianismo apartando-o de uma suposta essência ocidental e ocidentalizante, levando-se em conta sua composição multicultural e, portanto, sua heterogeneidade constitutiva. Para tanto, o trabalho compõe-se de três partes. Na primeira, avalia-se o grave silenciamento a respeito das experiências cristãs na Ásia e na África presente na maior parte das histórias do cristianismo produzidas por ocidentais. Na segunda, indicam-se algumas das motivações que podem conduzir à elaboração de narrativas históricas menos eurocêntricas sobre as trajetórias do movimento dos seguidores de Jesus Cristo. Na terceira, faz-se a recensão do primeiro volume da obra História do Movimento Cristão Mundial, de Dale T. Irvin e Scott W. Sunquist, publicado no Brasil em 2004. Trata-se este de um dos poucos textos historiográficos existentes em língua portuguesa que escapam ao lugar comum eurocêntrico que costuma ser a nota característica da maior parte dos trabalhos sobre história do cristianismo existentes no mercado editorial brasileiro.

This article, of exploratory and experimental nature, deals with the possibility and potential benefits of resizing the history of Christianity separating it from a supposed Western and Westernizing essence, taking into account its multicultural composition and therefore its constituent heterogeneity. To this end, the work consists of three parts. In the first, we evaluate the serious silencing about Christian experiences in Asia and Africa present in most histories of Christianity produced by the West. In the second, we indicate some of the motivations that may lead to the establishment of less Eurocentric historical narratives about the trajectories of motion of the followers of Jesus Christ. In the third, there is the recension of the first volume of the book History of the World Christian Movement, by Dale T. Irvin and Scott W. Sunquist, published in Brazil in 2004. It is this one of the few existing historiographic texts in Portuguese language that escape the Eurocentric commonplace that often is the characteristic note of most of the work on the history of Christianity existing in the Brazilian publishing market.
