Tradução em debate: disputas pela história literária de Portugal entre Robert Southey e João Guilherme Cristiano Müller

Neste artigo, apresento as disputas pela história literária de Portugal pelos letrados Robert Southey e João Guilherme Cristiano Müller a pro-pósito da tradução de “Extratos em português e em inglês, com as palavras propriamente acentuadas para facilitar o estudo daquela língua”, publicado originalmente por Southey no peri-ódico britânico Quartely Review, em 1809. João Guilherme Cristiano Müller traduziu o texto para o português em 1810, intitulando-o Memória sobre a li-teratura portuguesa. a partir da análise dos contextos de enunciação de ambos os textos em suas respectivas versões em inglês e português, exploro os horizontes de significação da história literária portuguesa e as disputas políticas, historiográficas e literárias entre os letrados, que enfrentavam o desafio comum da aceleração do tempo histórico e crise das representações em meio às guerras napoleônicas.

This article presents the disputes over Portuguese literary history between two men of letters, Robert Southey and João Guilherme Cristiano Müller. These dis-putes concern the translation of “Extratos em português e em inglês, com as pa-lavras propriamente acentuadas para facilitar o estudo daquela lingual”, originally published by Southey in the magazine Quartely Review, in 1809. João Guilherme Cristiano Müller translated the text into Portuguese in 1810, under the title of Memória sobre a literatura portuguesa. Based on the analyses of the discursive context of both texts in their respective versions in English and Portu-guese, I explore the semantic horizon of the Portuguese literary history and political, historiographical and literary disputes between these men of letters who face the common challenge of acceleration of his-torical time and crisis of representation during the Napoleonic wars.
