As instituições de ensino superior possuem um papel relevante no processo de desenvolvimento tecnológico, na preparação dos alunos e na geração de informação e conhecimento e este papel deve ser utilizado também para conduzir ao desenvolvimento de uma sociedade preocupada com os princípios da sustentabilidade. Porém, para que o processo seja realizado, faz-se necessário que as universidades incorporem princípios e práticas sustentáveis. Para tal, este artigo tem como objetivo analisar e produzir um panorama de como as maiores universidades do estado do Rio Grande do Sul – Brasil expõem espontaneamente em seus web sites oficiais suas iniciativas e boas práticas sustentáveis, tanto em seu planejamento estratégico, quanto em suas operações e comunicações via internet. Para tanto, uma revisão de literatura foi realizada sobre gestão ambiental nas instituições de ensino superior visando elaborar construtos que foram analisados por meio do instrumento elaborado por Tauchen e Brandli (2006). Realizou-se um estudo documental a partir das informações dos web sites das seis maiores universidades em número de alunos, tanto públicas quanto privadas, do estado do Rio Grande do Sul – Brasil. Os resultados atestam que nos web sites estão disponíveis poucas informações sobre as boas práticas de sustentabilidade presentes nas instituições de ensino superior. Esta defasagem prejudica a disseminação dos conceitos e da importância da sustentabilidade que são fundamentais para a sensibilização das instituições de ensino superior e da sociedade como um todo.

Higher education institutions have an important role in the technological development process in the preparation of students and the generation of information and knowledge and this role should also be used to drive the development of a caring society with the principles of sustainability. But for the process to be carried out, it is necessary that universities incorporate sustainable principles and practices. To this end, this article aims to analyze and produce a picture of how the largest universities in the Rio Grande do Sul state - Brazil spontaneously expose on their web official websites initiatives and good sustainable practices, both in its strategic planning, and in its operations and communications via internet. Therefore, a literature review was conducted on environmental management in higher education institutions to prepare constructs that were analyzed by the instrument developed by Tauchen and Brandli (2006). We conducted a desk study from the information of the web sites of the six largest universities in number of students, both public and private, of Rio Grande do Sul state - Brazil. The results show that the web sites are available little information on good sustainability practices present in higher education institutions. This delay undermines the dissemination of concepts and the importance of sustainability that are critical to the awareness of higher education.
