South Africa as regional power. Participation and involvement in the resolution and prevention of conflict in Africa. The purpose of this article is to analyze the role that South Africa has played in the resolution and prevention of conflict in the African continent since the arrival of Nelson Mandela (1994) to present days. Three main aspects are considered to outline the analysis: which are the factors that influence the role undertaken by South Africa; how is this role conceived in the foreign policy design itself; and to which degree this participation and involvement contributes to South Africa's intention to become a regional power and to be recognize as one. The article first presents a brief summary of the main principles and guidelines of South Africa's foreign policy in order to introduce the general framework in which its participation and involvement in the resolution and prevention of regional conflict can be set up. Secondly, an analysis of the main aspects, motivations and characteristics that have defined South Africa's participation in the subject are carried out, which has the objective of emphasizing the different modalities that South Africa's involvement has adopted and how those influence Pretoria's capacity and ability to become a regional power

En este trabajo se analiza el rol que ha desempeñado Sudáfrica en la resolución y prevención de conflictos en el continente africano, desde la llegada de Nelson Mandela (1994) hasta la actualidad, dando cuenta de tres cuestiones principales: cuáles son los factores que delinean la adopción de dicha postura; cómo se la concibe en el propio diseño de política exterior; y la relevancia que dicha participación cobra en el marco de la intención de Sudáfrica de erigirse como potencia regional y de ser reconocida como tal. En primer lugar, se hace una breve mención de los principales lineamientos y principios que orientan la política exterior de Sudáfrica en pos de presentar el marco general en el cual se inserta su participación e involucramiento en la resolución y prevención de conflictos regionales. En segundo lugar, se analizan los principales aspectos, motivaciones, y características que han ido configurando la participación de Sudáfrica en dicha materia, haciendo referencia a las distintas modalidades que la misma ha ido adoptando y cómo ésta ha influido en la capacidad de Pretoria de erigirse como potencia regional.
