The present work aims at studying the sacramental practices of the Catholic
clergy concerning the slaves amongst the late eighteenth and the nineteenth
century. Starting out from the sources, which were left behind due to nominal
settlements made under the prescription of the Council of Trent that reaffirmed
not only the access of the people, but also of the captives to the sacraments,
implying that this record should contain full details about it, and also that it should be done by the priest in charge in the book especially
meant for it, this work attempted to examine some aspects of the Catholic
clergy interpretations regarding the role of the captive population in the
economy of salvation. Texts from Brazilian colonial period clergymen that
built a Christian slavery practice were analyzed, confronting themselves with
the practice of three different sacraments: baptism, marriage and the rituals
that precede the appropriate death.
