The article examines three recent contributions from the literature on theories of political representation. The works examined are commonly concerned with engaging in a conceptual and historical “retreatâ€, in order to better frame the debate about the “crisis of representationâ€. The article starts with an exam of B. Manin’s approach to representative government, presenting his conceptual contribution and also the main blindspot in his work: the relationship between the concept of sovereignty and representative government. The other two authors here considered, M. Novaro and N. Urbinati, take on this problem, exploring the theme of popular sovereignty. Comparing the authors, the article concludes with a brief comment on why the democratic question is central to the understanding of the nexus between representation as sovereignty and representation as a form of government.
