João Cabral de Melo Neto é conhecido como o poeta antilírico e antissentimental por excelência, devido a sua produção poética racional preocupada com o papel da palavra e a construção obsessiva da estrutura do poema, o que lhe rendeu a alcunha de poeta-engenheiro. Grande parte da crítica se debruça aos estudos dos aspectos metalinguísticos e intertextuais na obra cabralina, deixando outros pontos relevantes de lado. Este artigo visa observar como o poeta retrata o masculino e o feminino em sua obra. Procura-se verificar as metáforas que João Cabral utiliza para a representação dos gêneros. Tomaremos por base, textos de Lauro Escorel e Marta Peixoto, dentre outros, observando como os críticos analisam tal representação na obra do poeta pernambucano.

João Cabral de Melo Neto is known as the antiliric and antisentimental poet par excellence, due to his rational poetic production concerned with the role of the word and the obsessive construction of the structure of the poem, which earned him the nickname of poet-engineer. Much of the criticism focuses on the study of metalinguistic and intertextual aspects in Cabral's work, leaving other relevant points aside. This article aims to observe how the poet portrays the masculine and feminine in his work. It is tried to verify the metaphors that João Cabral uses for the representation of the genres. We will take as a basis, texts by Lauro Escorel and Marta Peixoto, among others, observing how critics analyze such representation in the work of the poet from Pernambuco.
