Apesar de ser normalmente considerado como um gênero artÃstico universal, o
melodrama é pouco estudado no contexto dos paises de lÃnguas asiáticas. Sendo
este um conceito historicamente ocidental, pode-se questionar se ele é de fato
adequado para definir as representações artÃsticas destes paÃses. O presente artigo
pretende argumentar que “melodrama†pode referir-se a uma produção artÃstica
oriental, desde que sejam observados alguns elementos especÃficos da cultura
representada. Através da análise da série televisiva sul-coreana Dae Jang Geum,
um fenômeno mundial de audiência, verificaremos quais sãos os elementos
universais e os particulares do melodrama asiático.

Although it is normally considered as a universal artistic genre, the melodrama is
seldom contemplated in the context of the Asian community. As a historically
Western concept, can it really be used to define Eastern artistic representations?
This essay argues that “melodrama†can indeed be used in the Asian context,
provided that it observes some of the particularities of the culture that is being
represented. Through the analysis of the South Korean television series Dae Jang
Geum, a worldwide audience phenomenon, we shall observe more closely what are
those particularities and universalities of the Asian melodrama.
