Religião e ciência: caminho de aliança ética

A relação entre religião e ciência é um tema atrativo, necessário e muito complexo na contemporaneidade. Quando esse tema é discutido em nível público, muitas vezes é retratado como uma relação conflituosa em que duas grandezas heterogêneas se enfrentam a partir de atitudes totalmente diferentes e animadas por finalidades opostas. A história do cristianismo condensa a complexidade dessa relação. O objetivo desse texto é averiguar se religião e ciência podem formar uma aliança ética. Religião e ciência podem e devem contribuir para tornar a sociedade mais justa e humana? No cenário atual, é possível compreender ambas, conservando suas especificidades e riquezas? Tomando como base alguns autores que refletem essa questão, consideramos os seguintes elementos: primeiro, uma aproximação conceitual mínima dos termos religião e ciência. Em seguida, passaremos em revista cinco tipografias de classificação relacional entre ciência e religião. Depois, elencamos algumas nuances da complexidade da relação entre religião e ciência, sobretudo no contexto do Concílio Vaticano II (1965). Por fim, buscamos compreender como religião e ciência podem, por caminhos específicos, estarem a serviço da humanidade. Conclui-se afirmando que ciência e religião devem ser parceiras que, por intermédio da confirmação, colaborem na superação dos dramas da “casa comum”. Uma aliança ética é fundamental para que ambas cumpram sua missão de serva e não rainha da humanidade.

The relationship between religion and science is a very complex theme in contemporary times, it is also attractive and necessary. When discussed in general terms, it is often portrayed as a conflictive relationship of opposing forces facing each other from a totally different perspective and animated by contrasting objectives. The complexity of this relationship follows the historic existence of Christianity. Then, the purpose of this text is to ascertain whether religion and science can form an ethical alliance, or at least an understanding, by questioning if religion and science do contribute to making society more just and humane. From the point of view of authors who reflect this question, we try to approach a minimal conceptualization of the terms ‘religion’ and ‘science’. Next, we try to discuss five types of relational classification between them. In the end, we list some nuances of the complexity of the relationship between religion and science, especially in the context of the Second Vatican Council (1965), seeking to understand how religion and science can, in specific ways, be at the service of humankind. In final considerations, we come to conclude that science and religion might be partners through an ethical alliance so that both fulfill their mission to serve humanity and not reign over it.
