Este texto tem o objetivo de discutir a noção de recursividade (também denominada recursão, ou operação recursiva), amplamente difundida na teoria linguística, sob diferentes vieses. Sendo tema polêmico e multifacetário, traz à tona alguns debates, inclusive de caráter interdisciplinar. A teoria linguística, no contexto gerativista atual, se mostra favorável à concepção de que a recursão seja algo intrínseco à linguagem humana e, talvez, seu elemento de diferenciação em relação à de outros animais. Sendo assim, busca-se aqui uma breve abordagem acerca do tema e da necessidade de uma boa compreensão da ideia, pontuando as dificuldades derivadas de uma falta de unanimidade a respeito da definição do vocábulo, e mostrando caminhos alternativos, provenientes da matemática e da teoria da computação para procurar formalizar e uniformizar noções intuitivas utilizadas até então
This text aims to discuss the notion of recursion (also called recursiveness or recursive operation), widely diffused in linguistics, under different biases. Being a controversial and multifaceted theme, it raises some debates, including of an interdisciplinary nature. Linguistic theory in the current generativist context favors the idea that recursion is something intrinsic to human language, and perhaps the element that differs it from other animals’ languages. Thus, we propose a brief discussion on the subject and on the need for a good comprehension of the idea, highlighting the difficulties deriving from the lack of unanimity regarding the definition of the term, and showing alternative paths from mathematics and theory of computation to attempt to formalize and standardize intuitive notions used until now.
