Drought disturbances or changes in the flow of lotic environments can disrupt
communities causing "empty" spaces and redirecting the species that will compete
for space and resources. The objective of this work was to investigate the dynamics
of macroalgal community before and after a drainage event in an artificial channel.
Samples were taken at three points along the channel and at three steps: 1) before
draining (AD); 2) first sampling after the drainage (DD1), conducted 54 days
after the reestablishment of flow in the channel and; 3) second sampling after
drainage (DD2), at six months after normalization of channel flow. Macroalgae
were sampled by the transect technique and using visual estimation of abundance.
In total, were identified 15 taxa, distributed among the divisions Chlorophyta,
Cyanophyta, Rhodophyta and Ochrophyta. Only four taxa occurred in the three
samplings, showing a high turnover of species. Based on the Correspondence
Analysis (CA) it was possible to show a clear separation between the sample points
before and after the drainage, demonstrating that the community in AD, which
was in long stabilization, presented more similar among different segments. In this
case, the channel as an environment with more stable environmental conditions led
to a greater homogeneity of the community, while the drainage event promoted
the replacement of species. After draining, there was a reduction of richness and
highest number of taxa of Cyanophyta. Species of this group have mucilaginous
sheath, an important feature in the early stages of succession of lotic environments.
In the third sampling, the Chlorophyta division was again more abundant, with
the occurrence of filamentous species with larger cells and branching system,
suggesting the later stages of succession.
