Approaching Os Lusíadas as a work where poetry and history converge, this study seeks to situate Camões within his historical context and to address the following questions: did the poet draw inspiration for his own craft from the discourse of the chroniclers? In a period when both praise and blame were regarded as essential functions of poetry, what place does blame occupy within the grand epic structure? And what reasons justify its inclusion?
