This article gives an account of the origin and development of the Latin American and Caribbean Society of Environmental History (SOLCHA). We analyze the reasons that justify a special place for the Latin American and Caribbean Environmental History at the contemporary historiographical debate. Finally, we present the challenges to be faced by the members of SOLCHA in order to improve this society as an institution able to foment knowledge and research in Environmental History in our region and also over the world.

Este texto narra el origen y desarrollo de la Sociedad Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Historia Ambiental (SOLCHA). Analiza las razones que justifican otorgar a la historia ambiental latinoamericana y caribeña un lugar importante en el seno del debate historiográfico contemporáneo. Presenta los retos que la Sociedad debe enfrentar para crecer como institución que fomenta el interés el conocimento y la práctica de la historia ambiental en nuestra región y el mundo.
