As
inferior a 5.

Aiming to study the occurrence of the golden mussel, Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857), during
a salinization period, seven points of the lower Pelotas Stream were evaluated. The marginal and
ß oating vegetation, and hard substrates throughout 20 km extension in the stream were observed
from January to May 2005. Samples of sediment were collected by means of an EKMAN catcher
and a PICCARD dragger. It was evidenced the presence of living golden mussel specimens in the
points 3 and 4, where the maximum salinity was inferior to 5. In the points near the stream estuary,
where salinity was close to 25, it was not registered the presence of living animals, but only their
shells were observed. It is concluded that a gold mussel population exists established in the lower
Pelotas Stream and that the water salinization is a factor in the control of this population, but the
species tends disseminating up and down the stream.
