Este artigo apresenta resultados de pesquisa sobre o vocabulário da erva-mate (Ilex paraguarienses) em municípios sul-mato-grossenses situados na fronteira do Brasil com o Paraguai. Além de discutir questões teóricas acerca da relação entre língua, léxico e cultura, apresenta a metodologia adotada para a pesquisa e destaca questões relativas à macro e à microestrutura do VEM – Vocabulário da erva-mate no Cone Sul de Mato Grosso do Sul (JUSTINIANO, 2005). Por fim, pontua fatos lingüísticos de natureza lexicológica e sociolingüística, observados no conjunto do vocabulário estudado.

This article presents some research results about the vocabulary of the yerba maté (Ilex paraguarienses) in municipalities in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, located near the border of Brazil with Paraguay. Besides discussing theoretical matters concerning the relation among language, lexicon and culture, it presents the methodology adopted for the research and highlights subjects related to the macro and micro structure of the Vocabulary of the yerba maté in the south cone of Mato Grosso do Sul (JUSTINIANO, 2005). At last, it punctuates linguistic facts of lexicological and sociolinguistic nature, observed in the set of the studied vocabulary.
