O presente artigo aborda as concepções sobre a gênese e a natureza do Serviço Social no Brasil, bem como apresenta alguns aspectos dos significados sóciohistóricos da profissão. Considerando as inúmeras e significativas mudanças de rumo ocorridas ao longo da história, pretende-se analisar o processo de legitimação do Serviço Social e de consolidação de suas funções na sociedade e no Estado brasileiro, com base em metodologia que, essencialmente, privilegia a pesquisa da literatura sobre o tema. O recorte temporal, por sua vez, compreende o período de 1930, quando a profissão institucionaliza-se no Brasil, num contexto de intensa agudização das refrações da questão social, aos anos 2000. Por fim, tendo em vista o inegável amadurecimento intelectual da categoria dos assistentes sociais, ocorrido a partir dos anos oitenta do século XX, procura-se examinar os desafios do Serviço Social no país, em face dos retrocessos na preservação de direitos e do afloramento do conservadorismo e do neoconservadorismo na contemporaneidade.

This article addresses the conceptions of genesis and nature of Social Work in Brazil, as well as presents some aspects of the social-historical meanings of the profession. Considering the numerous and significant changes taken place throughout history,the process of legitimizing Social Service and consolidating its functions in society and in the Brazilian State is analyzed, on the basis of a methodology which is essentially a review of Literature on the subject. The timeline, in turn, covers the period of 1930, when the profession was institutionalized in Brazil, in a context of intensification of the social issues, to the years 2000. Finally, in view of the undeniable intellectual maturity of the category of social workers, which began in the 1980´s, the article seeks to examine the challenges faced by Social Service in the country, given the setbacks in the preservation of rights and the emerging conservatism and neoconservatism of contemporary times.
