O romance moderno como epopeia burguesa: o realismo inglês setecentista

O artigo trata da questão do romance e sua relação com o conceito de epopeia. Pensadores como Hegel e Georg Lukács se perguntaram: em que consiste o épico? Ambos se questionam se a epopeia desaparece com o fim do período histórico e cultural no qual tal forma literária existia ou se há uma representação do mundo própria do épico que pode se disseminar por outros gêneros. Para eles, existe um componente épico na forma romance, e o objetivo deste trabalho é justamente analisar essa composição, que consiste na figuração do imaginário burguês. A análise do conceito de épico no gênero romance foi realizada por meio de uma leitura de Robinson Crusoe, de Daniel Defoe, que corresponde ao arquétipo da possibilidade de epopeia no romance. Apontamos a caracterização do indivíduo burguês, sob o imaginário do puritanismo protestante, como meio de figuração dessa essência épica.

The article deals with the question of the novel and its relation to the concept of epic. Thinkers, such as Hegel and Georg Lukács, wondered: of what does the epic consist? Both question whether the epic disappears with the end of the period in which such a literary form existed or whether there is a representation of the epic world itself that can be disseminated by other genres. For both, there is an epic component in the novel, and the purpose of this work is to analyze this composition, which consists of the figuration of the bourgeois imaginary. The analysis of the concept of epic in the novel was performed through a reading of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, an archetypal narrative of the epic character of bourgeois representation. Our conclusion is that the characteristics of the bourgeois individual, under the Protestant imaginary, is the main point of the epic essence.
