O PRINCÍPIO DA ARBITRARIEDADE E A REFERÊNCIA EM FERDINAND DE SAUSSURE

Em 1937 Édouard Pichon publicou o artigo “La Linguistique em France: problèmes et
méthodes”, no qual acreditava denunciar um erro nas formulações saussurianas sobre o
arbitrário linguístico. Dois anos mais tarde, Émile Benveniste (1939) publicou um artigo
semelhante ao de Pichon (1937), intitulado “La Nature du signe linguistique”. Em resposta a
estes dois trabalhos, Charles Bally publicou, em 1940, o artigo “L’arbitraire du signe – Valeur
et signification”, que apresenta contra-argumentos em defesa do arbitrário saussuriano. É
plausível afirmar que os argumentos de Pichon (1937) e Benveniste (1939) retomam a questão
da referência na linguagem e, por tal motivo, pretendemos analisar este debate sobre o arbitrário
linguístico à luz do manuscrito saussuriano “Notes Item. Sôme et Sème”, no qual Saussure
explicita o fenômeno da onímica e as especificidades dos nomes próprios e geográficos como
categorias linguísticas que estabelecem uma relação com o objeto físico.

In 1937 Édouard Pichon published the article “La Linguistique en France: Problèmes
et méthodes”, in which he believed to denounce a mistake in the saussurian formulations of the
linguistic arbitrariness. Two years later, Émile Benveniste (1939) pusblished an article similar
to Pichon’s (1937), called “La Nature du signe linguistique”. In response to these two pieces of
work, Charles Bally published in 1940, the article “L’arbitraire du signe – Valeus et
signification”, in which presents counter-arguments defending the saussurian arbitrariness. It is
reasonable to observe that Pichon (1937) and Benveniste’s (1939) arguments take up the issue
of the language reference and, because of that, we intend to analyze this debate about the
linguistic arbitrariness using the saussurian manuscript “Notes Item. Sôme et Sème”, in which
Saussure explains the onime phenomenon and the specificities of the proper names and
geographic ones, which would be linguistic categories that establishes a relation with the
physical object.
