Este artigo visa discutir as relações entre romantismo e modernidade mediante uma análise comparativa de dois poemas: “Fantasmas”, de Hugo e “As Velhinhas”, de Baudelaire. A comparação tem como objetivo abordar o legado romântico para a modernidade. Os dois poemas possuem um forte cunho narrativo e participam do projeto romântico de revelar o papel importante desempenhado pelo poeta – e pela poesia – junto às sociedades modernas. Mas, expostas as afinidades que unem esses poemas, examinaremos os elementos que os diferenciam. Veremos assim que “As Velhinhas” parecem propor uma crítica a certas fantasias românticas presentes no poema de Hugo.

The text approaches the romanticism and the modernity by a comparison between two poems: “Phantoms”, by Victor Hugo, and “The Little old ladies”, by Baudelaire. The comparison aims to illuminate the romantic inheritance in modernity. Both poems have a narrative aspect and they follow the romantic project of describing the city and its social questions. Once the affinities between both poems are explained, we are going to examine the elements which distinguish them. We will see that the Baudelaire's poem seems to make a modern critique of the romantic fantasies which mark Hugo's poem.
