O Tetum pertence à família austronésia de línguas amplamente difundida no globo. Em Dili, capital do Timor Leste, o Tetum entrou em contato com o portugues em suas duas versões, o tetum standard e creolo. Portugues era a única língua reconhecida oficialmente na época da colonização portuguesa no Timor. Em 1975 a Indonésia invadiu o território e impôs o uso de sua língua nacional, o bahasa Indonésio também na parte oriental da ilha. A situação complexa de multiliguismo em Timor Leste tem hoje implicações no processo de emancipação da ex-colônia portuguesa. Há dúvidas sobre qual idioma deverá ser adotado como língua nacional do novo país.

Tetum belongs to the great Austronesian family of languages spoken in a vast area of the globe. In Dili, the capital of East Timor, Tetum came into intimate contact with Portuguese, in both ist standard and creolized varieties. Potuguese was the only recognized official language of the colony until 1975, when Indonisia invaded that territory. Portuguese was then replaced by the national language of Indonesia. This essay attempts to expose the complex situation of multilingualism in East Timor and to dicuss the perspectives of the portuguese language in the new nation
