Na construção historiográfica do teatro brasileiro moderno, as formas da comédia popular foram “superadas” a partir da implantação de novas formas teatrais, expoentes de uma visão de mundo mais condizente com as conquistas da modernidade. Este artigo procura demonstrar que esta construção teórica e discursiva legitima um determinado projeto cultural e civil para o país que remonta ao século XIX e recebe nova roupagem em meados do século XX.

In historiographical’s construction of modern Brazilian theater, the forms of popular comedy were "overcome" from the implementation of new theatrical forms, exponents of a more consistent view of the world with the achievements of modernity. This article shows that this theoretical and discursive construction legitimizes a certain cultural and civil project for the country dating back to the nineteenth century and receives new feature in the mid-twentieth century.
