O futuro da religião

A primeira palestra, O Futuro da Religião, apresenta uma reflexão sobre as religiões de salvação do Oriente Medio (JudaÃsmo, Cristianismo, Islamismo) e sobre as ideologias seculares de emancipação que essas religiões ajudaram a inspirar. O avanço da consciência religiosa da humanidade neste momento depende do aprofudamento do conteúdo desta orientação. Para ser fiel ao que tornou esta orientação persuasiva e poderosa, devemos radicalizá-la e colocá-la em oposição à s instituições estabelecidas e crenças dominantes. Isto pode ocorrer com ou sem o apoio da crença numa narrativa de intervenção divina na história. A diferença entre estes dois caminhos é importante. Contudo, as formas profanas e sagradas destes dois caminhos desta religião transformada são muito mais próximas entre si do que qualquer uma delas em relação à boa parte do conteúdo das religiões organizadas e convencionais ou do humanismo secular familiar.

The first lecture, The Future of Religion, presents a reflection on near-Eastern salvation religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and in the secular ideologies of emancipation that these religions helped inspire. The advance of the religious consciousness of humanity now depends on a deepening of the distinctive content of this orientation. To be faithful to what made this orientation persuasive and powerful in the first place, we must radicalize it against both established institutions and dominant beliefs. The radicalization can take place with or without reliance on belief in a narrative of divine intervention in history. The difference between these two paths matters. Nevertheless, the profane and the sacred forms of this transformed religion are closer to each other than either of them is to much of conventional organized religion and to much of the familiar secular humanism.
