This study analyzes the tales of Nikolai Gogol, “The Overcoat”, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “The Yellow Wallpaper” according to notions of estrangement-effect and desautomatization proposed by the Russian formalists. The construction of protagonists’ subjectivities will be also studied, as well as how the notions of estrangement and desautomatization are essential for the plots. In addition, through these notions, the way that reception of narratives occurs in the 21st century will be exemplified.
