O CAMPO E A CIDADE NA HISTÓRIA E NA LITERATURA (RAYMOND WILLIAMS) E UMA POSSÍVEL APROXIMAÇÃO AO REGIONALISMO GAÚCHO

Resumo Português:

O escritor e crítico Raymond Williams (País de Gales, 1921-1988),
na obra O Campo e a Cidade na História e na Literatura (1973), percebe
que ao longo dos séculos, na história da Inglaterra, são recorrentes os autores
que remetem às suas próprias infâncias ou à geração de seus pais e avós
como um período idílico e saudoso. Utilizando-se da metáfora da “escada
rolante” -, que realiza um movimento constante de retorno ao passado, mas
tendo como ponto de chegada o local de origem -, Williams questiona o
“velho hábito” de supervalorização do passado, os “bons tempos de
antigamente”, como pretexto para criticar o presente (Williams, 1989, p.25).
Assim, cabe um paralelo com a história e a cultura do Rio Grande do Sul, em
que autores como Barbosa Lessa e Paixão Côrtes, também realizam uma
tentativa de recuperar ou congelar a tradição gaúcha. Para pensar o mundo
inglês da virada do século XVIII para o XIX, Williams apresenta suas
memórias e sua experiência familiar, visto que nasceu em uma pequena
aldeia no País de Gales, numa região rural, e depois vai para Londres e para
a universidade. Apenas então, nessas circunstâncias, tem acesso às reflexões
acerca da vida no campo e à literatura de cunho regional. Apesar do livro
enfocar as transformações da história e da literatura na Grã-Bretanha ao
longo dos séculos, tais reflexões, marcadamente de natureza marxista e
crítica, podem ser trazidas para pensarmos a história literária e cultural do
Rio Grande do Sul e o regionalismo gaúcho.

The writer and critic Raymond Williams (Wales (1921-1988), in
the book The Country and the City (1973), realizes that along the centuries,
in England history, there are frequent authors who refer to their own
childhood or to the generation of their parents and grandparents as an idyllic
and homesick period. Using the metaphor of the “escalator” – which carries
a steady return to the past, but having the place of origin as the point of
arrival -, Williams questions the “old habit” of overvaluation of the past, the
“good old days of yesteryear”, as an excuse to criticize the present
(Williams,1989, p. 25). So, it can be drawn a parallel with the history and
culture of Rio Grande do Sul, taking authors like Barbosa Lessa and Paixão Côrtes that also perform an attempt to recover or to ‘freeze’ the ‘gaúcho’
tradition. To think the English world at the turn of the XVIII to the XIX
centuries, Williams presents his memories and his family experience,
because he was born in a small village in Wales, in a rural area, and then he
went to London and to the university. Only then, in these circumstances, he
had access to the reflections about the life and the literature of regional
features. Despite the fact that the book focuses on the transformations in the
history and in the literature of Great Britain over the centuries, such
reflections – highly Marxist and critical – can be brought to think about the
literary and cultural history of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and
the ‘gaúcho’ regionalism.
